Who Was John Knox?

Reformer. Preacher. Voice for the People.

John Knox (c. 1514–1572) was a passionate preacher and the leading figure of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland. Originally a Catholic priest, Knox was deeply influenced by reformers like John Calvin. He became a bold advocate for church reform, insisting that all people—not just clergy—should have access to the Bible and a voice in the life of the church.

Knox helped establish a new vision for the church that emphasized:

    • Scripture as the foundation of faith
    • Education for all believers
    • A church led by elders and governed by its members

His work laid the foundation for what we now know as Presbyterianism—a movement rooted in shared leadership, deep faith, and commitment to justice.

Today, churches like ours bear his name in honor of that legacy—faithful, courageous, and devoted to Christ’s mission.
